MMWR: Global Polio Detection is Improving, But Gaps Remain in Finding Disease Quickly

CDC’s new MMWR provides an annual update on the performance of the systems used to detect polio cases in 34 countries at high risk for the disease. This includes testing stool samples of individuals with acute flaccid paralysis for poliovirus as well as testing sewage samples to detect poliovirus in the environment. From 2021 to 2022, polio detection improved slightly; however, substantial gaps remain in subnational areas, with less than 80% of subnational areas meeting the target for stool specimen collection. The number of sewage sampling sites in countries at high risk increased during the study period. Read more in CDC’s MMWR here.
