CDC Warns of Looming Tetanus Shot Shortages This Summer

The CDC is urging doctors to conserve a specific tetanus shot due to anticipated shortages after MassBiologics, the sole U.S. manufacturer, ceased production. Sanofi is working to increase supply, but constraints are expected throughout 2024, with Grifols, the exclusive distributor for MassBiologics, expecting availability only until June.

 

Temporary ordering controls are in place, and the CDC recommends using the Tdap vaccine, offering broader protection, when possible. Tetanus shots, usually given every 10 years, may require early administration for severe wounds, with Tdap considered an acceptable alternative. Read more from The Hill here.
