Cancer-Causing Chemical Can Form at ‘Unacceptably High Levels’ in Certain Acne Products

A recent report from Valisure, an independent laboratory, highlights concerns regarding benzene formation in acne treatment products containing benzoyl peroxide, a known carcinogen. The report indicates that high levels of benzene, exceeding FDA concentration limits by over 800 times, can develop when these products are exposed to high temperatures, such as in a hot car.

Tests conducted by Valisure demonstrated benzene presence not only within the products but also in the surrounding air, with levels surpassing EPA thresholds for inhalation exposure by over 1,200 times. However, acne treatments containing alternative active ingredients like salicylic acid or adapalene did not exhibit similar benzene formation. Read more from CNN here.
