CDC Looks at Who Might Purchase Irradiated Food
Foodborne illness affects about 48 million Americans annually. Food irradiation, a safe method to kill bacteria and extend food shelf life, faces consumer hesitancy due to safety misconceptions and lack of knowledge. A 2022 survey by the CDC analyzed the relationship between age and knowledge of food irradiation among 1,009 participants.
Findings revealed that 56% of respondents would likely purchase irradiated foods if they learned more about the process, with older adults being more knowledgeable. This suggests targeted education could enhance acceptance. Effective consumer messaging about food irradiation's safety could improve foodborne illness prevention and address growing food safety concerns. Read the article from the CDC here.
