Scientists Warn Antibacterial Soaps, Wipes Can Fuel Superbugs

Researchers are raising concerns that widespread use of antibacterial soaps, wipes, and other household products may be accelerating antimicrobial resistance (AMR) without delivering added public health benefit.

Evidence shows that common biocides, such as quaternary ammonium compounds, can foster cross-resistance to critical antibiotics and contribute to the spread of resistant bacteria in the environment. With AMR already responsible for over one million deaths annually, scientists emphasize the need to expand prevention strategies beyond healthcare and agriculture.

They urge policymakers to restrict unnecessary antimicrobial ingredients, strengthen environmental monitoring, and prioritize public education promoting effective alternatives like plain soap and water. Read more from the Green Science Policy Institute here.
