Why Your Sunscreen is Finally Getting a Major Upgrade
For the first time in nearly 30 years, the FDA has approved a new chemical sunscreen ingredient for use in the United States. Bemotrizinol, already widely used in Europe and Asia, provides broad-spectrum protection against both UVA and UVB rays and is more photostable than some existing U.S. sunscreen ingredients, meaning its protection degrades more slowly in sunlight.
Experts note that bemotrizinol is backed by extensive safety data from decades of use and FDA-reviewed testing. The approval comes as public health professionals continue to address sunscreen misinformation and promote skin cancer prevention through evidence-based sun safety messaging.
