CDC: Prevent Bug Bites

The CDC reminds us that mosquitoes and ticks can spread diseases that make us sick, like West Nile virus and Lyme disease. The most effective way to avoid getting sick from diseases spread by mosquitoes and ticks is to prevent bites. To prevent mosquito bites, use Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)-registered insect repellent, wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants, treat clothing and gear with 0.5% permethrin, and take steps to control mosquitoes indoors and outdoors. To prevent tick bites, avoid wooded or brushy areas with high grass and leaf litter, treat clothing and gear with 0.5% permethrin, and use an EPA-registered insect repellent. Check your body, clothing, gear, and pets for ticks after being outdoors. If you find a tick attached to your skin, the key is to properly remove the tick as soon as possible.
