Ex-CDC Director Warns Ebola Outbreak Could Rank Second Largest in History

Former CDC Director Robert Redfield warned the Ebola outbreak linked to the Bundibugyo virus in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda could become the second-largest recorded outbreak, noting it is already the third largest.

WHO reported 134 confirmed cases and 18 deaths, plus 906 suspected cases and 223 suspected deaths, mostly in the Congo with cases in Uganda. He referenced the 2014–2016 West Africa outbreak (28,600 cases, 11,308 deaths) and the 2018–2020 Congo outbreak (3,470 cases, 2,287 deaths).

WHO said conflict is hampering response efforts. CDC has issued travel restrictions and enhanced airport screening. Read more from The Hill here.
