Therapists Are Using AI to Take Notes
A growing number of mental health providers are adopting AI-powered tools to record sessions, generate transcripts and draft clinical notes, with proponents citing substantial reductions in administrative workload and documentation time.
However, surveys highlighted persistent public concerns about AI in healthcare: only 11% of Americans reported openness to using AI for mental health care, 8% said they trust it, and 77% expressed concern about how health information would be stored and used. Experts emphasized that HIPAA compliance does not eliminate data-breach risks and that informed, verbal consent is critical.
Researchers and clinicians also noted that AI recording may affect patient disclosure, trust and the therapeutic relationship, while requiring careful oversight to prevent documentation errors. Read more from NPR here.
